Before we start, let us tell you that ideally, there are no hypoallergenic dog breeds. The only difference is that some dogs shed more and some less. We do have dogs that don’t shed and people who produced an irritant response to dog shedding must go for dogs who shed less.
Most people think that pet allergies are caused by the fur or dogs or cats, but in reality, this allergy is due to the protein they release. All dogs release the same amount of protein and whatever dog you get home, if you are allergic to the proteins it produces, the allergy is not going to go anywhere.
There are some breeds of dogs marketed as hypoallergenic because they do not shed fur and they shed very little. Because these dogs do not shed fur, the allergy-causing dander that sticks to their fur does not get released into the air or onto the floor as much as with shedding dogs. You can have a dog who is less shedding, but there is no such thing as hypoallergenic breeds of dog.
If you are highly allergic to dogs, but still love them, consider the following tips to reduce the irritation:
- Choose a smaller dog, who is likely to shed less than a normal dog.
- Keep your pet always out of your bedroom where you are spending most of your time.
- Keep your pet outside, if the weather permits
Bathe your pet weekly to remove dander from its coat.
